Having finally got round to ordering some more 20w Wemlites I’ve had the trap out a couple of times this week. Nothing out of the ordinary to report apart from the superb Acleris cristana pictured below. This represents only the third site record, the others being March 2008 and April 2011. Also seen here during March were singles of Amblyptilia acanthadactyla on 10th, and both Twin-spot Quaker and Red Chestnut on 30th. Early Grey still hanging on, Early Thorn starting to appear plus nfy Double-striped and Brindled Pug.
(PS: of interest to some, my first Wemlite bulb lasted approx 18 months)
I don’t like the Wemlite. I presume this is the bulb that does three loops up from the base. I have found that they kill moths (and other insects) that get to the junction of the tubes and base. It is not that they get trapped as some say. I suspect it is that they are not fully shielded against hazardous UV. I have been trying a 160 watt black light recently (this is a blended MV bulb with a Wood’s Glass envelope). I also use UV and blue light safety specs. They do not seem to attract micros as well as more balanced light but they are OK for the noctuids.
Yes, that’s the one. Apart from the odd gnat or fly that gets stuck (and killed as a result) I’ve never had a problems with it.
