Having cast envious eyes over Neil’s night’s catch on display at Saturday’s fab meeting, and having grumbled to Brian that I never get anything in the garden trap until May, I caught a rather dapper dotted chestnut last night: a bit nibbled around the edges but still special because it’s my first. Also, another 14 species, which makes it a good night for my corner of north Suffolk.

After my usual slow start to the year here in IP1 things have finally got going in the last few days – I finally reached a double figure species count last night.
The usual suspects making up the bulk of catches with Orthosias starting to build up but also favourites such as Oak Beauty. The only moths of real interest this week have been an early Esperia sulphurella indoors on 8th and an Epermenia chaerophyllella last night. Hopefully the next few nights will keep the momentum going

Well done Tony. Have had Dotted chestnut in the past but not this season yet. Traps on again tonight so you never know!
