New Trap .. New Moth

After plugging away for many years with my trusty Skinner trap and 11w actinic tube I’ve recently started experimenting with a new garden set-up in the shape of a 20w Wemlight and … thanks to Matthew … borrowed Robinson trap. The rainguard needs refining but provisional results seem to be encouraging.

Last night was an interesting case in point. With the forecast suggesting a spell of lengthy and, at times, heavy rain I would probably have had second thoughts about running my skinner. Not so the new trap which stayed dry inside and delivered two seconds for the garden in the form of Scrobipalpa costella and Nephopterix angustella, and a first (my 620th species to date) – Ypsolopha alpella

Like the Y. alpella. I have yet to see it. Another oak feeder like the italica.

Indeed. A plain looking moth at first sight but finely marked when viewed up close. Have done well for Ypsolophidae this year adding this and dentella to the garden list.

Missed out on last nights Vestal influx :-(

  3. Raymond Watson says:

So did I Paul, despite large numbers at coastal sites my catch was miserable last night.

2 Vestal here in Ipswich so not all of them were on the coast. With the numbers coming in surely only a matter of time before they turn up (although I did think the same for Bordered straw, but I’m still waiting for one this year here at IGC).

  5. Neil says:

Are you catching a greater quantity of moths, or is it too early to be sure yet?

  6. paulb says:

Hello Neil … Hard to say although, simply because of how Skinner and Robinson traps work, I’m probably getting a few more Large Yellow Underwing and Flounced Rustic than normal. For sure, I’m going to stick with it and just keep my fingers crossed that we get a few decent, consecutive nights when I can do some back-to-back testing.
