I put a trap out last night, just in case. Only three species: 6 december moth, 2 gem and a rush veneer (my first of the year). Tonight might be worth a try…
Interesting Tony. I have also taken Gem recently – singles on the nights of 18 & 19 November. A Dark Sword-grass on 18th and loads of Diamond-back Moth, Rusty-dot Pearl and a few Silver Y.
I had 7sp, only 12 moths. Mottled umber, November moth, Yellow-line quaker, Vines rustic, Acleris sparsana, E. postvittana and the only migrant an Udea ferrugalis. Feels very cold here this evening so not going to run a trap looks a bit warmer tomorrow night possibly.
It got chilly here too, but only after I’d already put the trap on. The weather forecast was wrong of course. Anyway, it looks as if Saturday might be the best night – unfortunately I’ll be in Wiltshire!
I forgot to mention in my note that all the migrants last night (ie both gems and the rush veneer) were very worn – unlike any others I’ve seen over the past few years. So maybe they’d already had a life, either in Suffolk or Holland, before arriving in my garden.
