Damp ‘n’ Dark

Last night was too good an evening to miss – no wind and relatively mild, though drizzly. Not that there was very much about (4 species), but it was still interesting: 4 sprawler, 2 rusty-dot pearl, 4 December moth, an angle shades and a feathered thorn.

No winter moth yet (has anyone seen any?). Also, I’ve caught two female December moths – I usually only get males.

I put the trap out for about 3 hours yesterday evening and caught 4 species including my first Winter Moth of the season. Also an impressive 11 December Moths.

Winter Moth at Hollesley too. 16 species last night. Lots of December Moth.

I too ran a trap as it was mild, up in the woods around the work-sheds. Certainly makes a difference trapping where there are more trees – I had 9sp, including my first December moths (16) and Scarce umbers (3) for the year. No Winter moth here or Northern winter moth either, a species I normally get at this time of year. A few November moths still to check for the other 2 species.
Trap on again in the garden tonight for a few hours.

Forgot to mention in my reply that I had a female December moth too, in fact it was in cop with a male. A few of my December moths hadn’t got perfect wings either, suggesting that they had emerged in less than ideal conditions.
Never had Sprawler here at IGC in 19 years of trapping.
