Should be productive after the rain.

Had another 41 species on 19th with another Gem and pleasingly also a Delicate. My commonest species is still the Large Yellow Underwing though not much has shifted it off since mid August. Black Rustic and Beaded Chestnut are next on the abundance scale at present. I watched the rain approach last night on the met office site and retrieved my traps before it set in. Not sorted yet but looks like standard autumn species. If we can believe the forecast though it should be productive for a few days after today’s rain stops. Mild, calm and humid.

Good to see that you picked up a Delicate Raymond. Two more for me at Bawdsey last night (20th) – picking them up almost nightly the past week.

I also had Scarce Bordered Straw last night and two female Gems (one each of the past two nights).

We had better take advantage of these predicted warm nights – the Countryfile forecast I’ve just seen is predicting an arctic blast at the end of the week!

Yes we have a heafty high developing over Greenland to bring the arctic air down. Probably from Friday. How long that lasts depends on whether Atlantic lows can get across to us as they are being pushed south.

This high is forecasted, by those who dare forecast long range, not to budge much all winter like the one last year in the north east Artic region. Could be a very cold and snowy winter ahead. Making the most of the conditions myself trapping every night, starting tonight while the good weather for moths lasts. Plenty of Redwings coming over when putting the traps out after rain cleared at 10pm tonight, hopefully some nice moths to come too!
