Hornet Clearwing

What a difference a day makes. I was just finishing my lunchtime walk when I noticed a Hornet Clearwing exuvial case lying at the base of the poplar tree that stands just outside the Council Offices, Hadleigh. I quickly found three more, including one that was still occupied. After carefully extracting the case/moth it must have responded to the little extra warmth of my hand and emerged almost immediately.

Nice one! Have seen the female adult on two occasions, both in the afternoon sunshine at home. Was away when my Brother photographed the mating pair on a poplar stump!

Well done Paul, the warmer weather must have brought them out. Checked some Poplars here today but didn’t find any moths.
