No luck with Orange-tailed Clearwing

Neil & I went out this afternoon to look for Orange-tailed Clearwing – at Lakenheath RSPB (where a worn individual was graphed in late June last year) and at Barton Mills where Lee Gregory discovered the moth back in 2004. Despite the promising weather conditions we failed to record the moth at either site. In fact, there was very little Guelder Rose at Lakenheath, apart from a couple of small bushes just outside the visitors centre. It wasn’t all doom and gloom there though, thanks to a young Jackdaw that’s been making friends with passers by.

Lovely bird the Jackdaw. Crows are quite intelligent. We had one here a few years ago that landed on my shoulder a few times but I suspect that was its undoing by some who objected and it apparently stole ear-rings. It was no longer seen as the year progressed.

Searching the Poplar trees whilst waiting for the sun to come out from behind the clouds resulted in the discovery of caterpillars of White satin and a single small Puss moth caterpillar.
