Recent garden trapping in Ipswich

I’ve run the garden trap recently on a couple of warmer nights. I don’t normally get too much of interest at this time of year but this spring I’ve been picking up some of the woodland species – Tortricodes alternella, several on both occasions, Spring User on both occasions and an Oak Beauty last night. Last night also saw my first Small Quaker and Epiphyas postvittana of the year, a couple of Chestnuts and a site first with Amblyptilia acanthadactyla.

Similar here in Gorleston Tony. I dont usually get T. alternella, but had several this year along with Chestnut which is also rare for my garden. Last night some firsts for the year inc. Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, Acleris cristana & Early Grey.

To add to the comments about woodland species turning up in people’s gardens, I had a message from Steve Goddard the other day, he had a Small brindled beauty which was new to him (and new for Martlesham Heath). With the warm conditions moths are obviously moving around a bit. Certainly well worth running moth traps at the moment if you haven’t seen some of the early season woodland species on your site.
