Recent moths – Lemon sallows

With the warm weather in recent times, I’ve had some interesting sightings, only just now had the time to report on them! At IGC, moths of note have included Dusky lemon sallow (29th, second site record), L-Album wainscot (seen most nights with a maximum of 6 on the 26th), Deep brown dart, Black rustic (a few), Large ranunculus (2), Sallow (good count of 5 on 1st, 2 were the plain form) and the first Merveille du Jour for the year also on the 1st.

Tony and myself went out to Little Blakenham on the 29th, searching Ivy blossom around the Poplar trees in that area, and were rewarded with 22 species seen. Best moth was the target for the night, a single female Pale lemon sallow. We also found a Dusky lemon sallow, a Red underwing, Sallow, Pink-barred sallow, Barred sallow, Silver Y (3), Brick, Beaded chestnut and L-Album wainscot (c.4) to name a few. There have been other sightings of Pale lemon sallow especially on the south coast suggesting some are immigrants from Europe, so watch out, they could turn up anywhere.
