I had a report of this BAP species from Rob Garrod this week. It was along the Gipping River in Ipswich on Tuesday 14 June. I went along and had a look at the site on a sunny lunchtime but failed to see any adults flying or at rest on the vegetation. I’d have tried sweeping the Black Horehound to see if that had any better success but I’d left the net in the car. It will have to wait for another day.
It would be worth checking clumps of Black Horehound for this moth in the next few weeks. Let me know if you have any success.
I’ve been looking around my garden for this moth recently where I did see it a few years ago but not seen any yet. I was talking to John Chainey about this moth recently as he had seen it in Hertfordshire. He said that it can be present one year at a site but disappear the next so I guess it is a moth that fluctuates greatly in numbers and maybe moves around with the food-plant, horehound being a ruderal weed species.
