Bradwell 6 July

I ran the traps at home last night, 87 species, The best for me was (see added comment). Small Elephant Hawk-moth which Brian and I have never seen in this North- east corner. It would be interesting to discover when it was last recorded in the Lothingland area. Other good moths included Water Ermine, Cream Bordered Green-pea, Southern Wainscot, Magpie, White Satin, Peach Blossom, 2 Marbled Brown still around, 3 Ghost moth, S gigantella, A beatricella. I still haven’t seen a Privet Hawk-moth this season! Migrants were Dark Sword-grass and Silver Y.

You are welcome to some of my Privet Hawk-moths as we have rather a lot this year. We have been waiting for the Pine H-m but it finally turned up last night. Some good migrants around at the moment, both macro and micro, looks like July/August could be good for them this year.

the last micro identified was Gypsonoma oppressana, possibly the best moth species seen at Herringfleet Hills on June 29.

Small elephant hawk does seem to be having a good year with me, I normally get 1-2 a night but this year some nights I have been seeing 4. We also had a lot at the Knettishall heath moth night too, although both my site and Knettishall are more typical habitats for the species. So maybe with the warm weather they are moving around a bit.
