I know many people in the moth world have got this book, so thought it would be useful to post a copy of the message I recieved from the author regarding a web site where corrections and updates can be viewed. See below.

Neil

On Christmas Eve my very kind daughter-in-law presented me with a new website at www.chrismanley.co.uk

This mainly relates to moths, where you can buy books and apps.

Specifically for those who already have the 2nd edition, there is my Excel running list, kept for any future reprint, of errors, corrections, improvements, new species, etc. There is also a PDF of images which can be downloaded, printed and pasted into the book.

I’m hoping these will be useful as it is often hard to find out about errors and updates for reference books. If you do find it helpful please feel free to mention it on Facebook etc. as, of course, I have no way of directly contacting everyone who has been good enough to buy the book!

Additionally on the site you will see that I am running in the London Marathon 2016 raising funds for Plantlife, They do wonderful work conserving our wild plants and, crucially, their habitats which helps all wildlife, particularly including moths and butterflies. There is a link to follow my progress if you wish.

Best wishes, Happy New Year

Chris Manley

PS. There is a review in Atropos just published pointing out a few errors which I shall address shortly.

According to the initial source (see below), the key includes all 86 North-West European Lithocolletinae (i.e. it covers all the Phyll’ sp listed in the new checklist). The user can input data on several external morphological characters in addition to distribution, host plant and even characteristics of the larval feeding traces to reach an identification.

A message from Graham Green

“I have recently taken over from Heather Young as the East of England GMS coordinator. I will be contacting all current participants in the area in due course regarding record submission, but in the meantime I’m very happy to pass on any suggestions they may have for improving the scheme. I’m especially keen to ensure that, at least, all regularly caught macros are included.

If anyone is considered joining the scheme, please contact me for more information. My e-mail address is grahamgeen@btinternet.com.

Very best wishes,

It can be ordered from the Field Studies Council for £25 plus £3 p&p. Their website can be found at http://www.field-studies-council.org/

Although it hasn’t yet appeared on their web site you can give them a ring and pre-order it.

Following a recent conversation at a moth night and a comment on an email group I got to wondering how much it actually costs to run a moth trap overnight.

The formula is quite simple to use as long as you know the cost of a unit (kWh) of electricity. If the following is not correct then let me know, my physics is a bit rusty.

Cost = power of lamp in kW x kWh cost x number of hours

Assuming a unit cost of 15p per kWh (which is a little on the high side but will depend on your supplier/tariff.

Cost of a 125W MV lamp per hour = .125 x 15 = 1.875 pence per hour

Cost of a 40W actinic per hour = .04 x 15 = 0.6 pence per hour

Cost of a 15W actinic per hour = .015 x 15 = .225 pence per hour

The following table summarises approximate costs for a range of running times. Values are rounded to nearest 0.5p

125W MV

40W actinic

15W actinic

Cost for 8 hours

15p

5p

2p

Cost for 10 hours

18.5p

6p

2p

Cost for 12 hours

22.5p

7p

2.5p

Personally I’ll continue splashing out the higher cost for the MV the extra moths are worth the expense .
