Moth Night at Church Farm SWT Reserve – 21st May 2011

This was the first visit of the group to this SWT reserve. Six of the group turned up for the evening and we ran nine lights in all. Lights were set up in the woodland in the western part of the reserve and in a rough grassy area, with an additional light down near a piece of wet woodland.

We didn’t find anything of outstanding rarity but the following is a selection of the more interesting species from the 100+ species recorded (some of them rather early in appearance) – Orange Footman, Large Yellow Underwing, Spruce Carpet, Cream-spot Tiger, Dingy Shell, Clouded-bordered Brindle, Large Nutmeg, Teleiodes luculella, Alabonia geoffrella and Strophedra nitidana.

Moths at Lower Hollesley – 2 June 2011

I went out last night (2 June) on Lower Hollesley Common, for a 2.5 hour trapping session with Nick Mason. Highlights were pristine examples of Grass Wave and Rosy Marbled. Also recorded were a single Lunar Yellow Underwing and a Brindled White-spot.

Denisia albimaculea

Trapped what I am pretty certain is this species on 25th May. Not many Suffolk records of this moth by the look of the web site. See picture below.

Another Adela species

Found another species of Adela today – a male Adela croesella in my greenhouse at home. That’s four different species in two days. They are well worth looking out for as they are a colourful group of micros and seem to be around in reasonable numbers this year.

New Suffolk site for Coleophora fuscicornis

I was out sweeping today and found another site for Coleophora fuscicornis (pRDB1). This is the second site in Suffolk where I have found it. It was quite easy to find and several adults were found. I did visit this site when I was first searching for the moth in the county, so it may be that it is a recent arrival. The good news is that the area is unlikely to be affected by Environment Agency works on the sea-wall .

Adelas

Managed to find three species of Adela today, all in the same area of wet grassland at IGC. Found a few Adela reaumerella hanging on (they are almost over now), 10+ Adela rufimitella on Ladies smock flowers and a single Adela fibulella on Germander speedwell flowers. The last one was in fact my first sighting of the species at the site, and is the first new moth for IGC in 2011. Also found lots of Micropterix calthella on Buttercups, 6+ Pyrausta aurata and a Glyphipterix simpliciella – not bad for half an hour daytime searching!

Early sighting

Hello All

Moths certainly seem to be emerging early this year – last night I trapped a Lunar yellow underwing, beating my previous earliest sighting of this species by 2 weeks!

A Dark sword grass was also caught along with lots of Treble lines and Orange footman.

Spindle Ermine?

On my way home from work on Friday I saw what appears to be the workings of Ypon’ cagnagella just south of Bildeston on the B1115. They weren’t there on Thursday evening. Fingers crossed … a couple of pic’s attached.

Cochylis molliculana

At the SMG meeting on Saturday night at Mendlesham, the group recorded a specimen of Cochylis molliculana. This is thought to be the first county record. One to watch out for, as it looks very similar to Cochylis atricapitana, but is brown and cream rather than black and white (see photo).

Orange footman

There seemed to be a big hatch of Orange footman here at IGC last night. The one trap I put out in the woods around the work sheds caught 115! Also in the trap of note were 74 Treble lines, 31 Shuttle-shaped dart, 5 Light brocade, Incurvaria oehlmanniella and a Dark-sword grass.
