Yellow-legged clearwing is still on the wing – I had 4 come to the Hyl lure whilst trying around clumps of Raspberry at the golf course this afternoon.
My hunch paid off this morning when five Six-belted Clearwings came to lure amongst trefoil clumps on the banking adjacent to the two lay-by’s either side of the A14 just west of the Stowmarket turn off (J49?).
A clear sky and cool temperatures resulted in a poor night for moths, with 41 species noted from 8 traps with nothing in high numbers. Best moths recorded were Reed dagger, Silky wainscot, Fen wainscot, Pima boisduvaliella and Scrobipalpa nitentella.
It was a couple of years ago I think that some of our Norfolk colleagues mentioned finding Six-belted Clearwing on vegetated shingle sites. On Friday I popped up to Aldeburgh beach and had four come to pheromone lure. Conditions were not ideal with quite a stiff breeze blowing down the beach.
I moved onto Sizewell beach and although there is a bit of Bird’s-foot Trefoil up past the reactor no clearwings came to the lure. It had started to cloud over by this time so that could well explain the lack of response. I had a similar negative result at Dunwich Beach. It would be worth trying these latter two sites with better conditions to be a little more certain.
I too had a few interesting bits in the garden trap out of 107sp: Scarce silver lines, Vitula biviella (15), P. malvella, B. atra, Dioryctria schuetzeella and S. laricana.
We had an excellent joint meeting with the Essex group at Stour wood RSPB reserve. I have 202sp in my notebook, and we saw 2 of the 3 target species – Olive crescent (c.40) and The Triangle (c.25). There were sightings of 2 unexpected species – Four-spotted footman (2 females) and Evergestis limbata.
Seemed much slower than the previous outing but despite the conditions we managed 90 species the best of which: Archips crataegana, Anacampsis blattariella, Monochroa cytisella, Aidaina microdactyla, Shaded Fan-foot and Dark Spectacle
A few bits n bobs of interest last night. Epiblema foenella (new site record), Catoptria pinella (6th site record), Shaded Broadbar (first since 2008) and a slightly tatty looking Silver Y. Still no parva
I found at least 20 exuviae of this clearwing around the edge of an Oak stump today, which prompted me to try the pheromone in the garden once I was at home. Sure enough, within seconds 2 moths were drawn in, followed by another about 10 minutes later. So it seems now is the time to go and search for this species.
I found a female of this moth floating in a bucket of water outside my house this afternoon – I’ve rescued it as it was still alive. First time I’ve seen it here since 2006. A search of the garden around clumps of Black horehound proved fruitless however, no more found.
