21-22 November Hollesley

I don’t stop for winter. Whilst I cannot claim the numbers reported by Neil it is none the less interesting and keeps the records going. 10 and 11 species on 21 and 22 respectively. Comprising in total Silver Y, December, Winter, Feathered Thorn, Chestnut, Dark Chestnut, Merveille du Jour, Large Wainscot, Scarce Umber, Rush Veneer, Udea ferrugalis, Acleris sparsana, Plutella xylostella, Epiphyas postvittana, Blastobasis lacticolella and a Scrobipalpa (looks like nitendella).

Night of 18th November – still moths around despite the cold.

Only 2 degrees when I left the house this morning to check the traps put out in the woods around the work-shed area at the golf course last night. Not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few moths caught. Only 7 sp, but 48 moths:
Mottled umber – 17
December moth – 16
Scarce umber – 10
Feathered thorn – 2
Northern winter moth – 1
Acleris sparsana – 1
Chestnut – 1

Groton Wood – 16th November

I met up with Colin Plant to have a look for Plumed Prominent at Groton Wood last night although prospects for a good night’s mothing were a bit slim with temperatures starting off at around 7.5C. We set five MV traps running around the southern part of the wood and after all the hard work had been done we were joined my Matthew :-) .

Moths were a bit low on the ground but we did manage a few species – Feathered Thorn, Chestnut, Winter Moth, Mottled Umber, Yellow-line Quaker, Brick, December Moth, a dark Plutella xylostella. There were a few Acleris, probably ferrugana based on the abundance of oak and general lack of birch in the wood. We also had three males of the target species, Plumed Prominent, which was pretty fair going given the cold night. Sitting in Colin’s Landrover van drinking coffee is a much better way of moth recording on these cold autumn nights than sitting out in the open waiting for the moths to trickle in.

Traps away !

With the nearby continent now having cooler temperatures there seems little likelihood of much turning up. On the night of 13 Nov. I had just 5 species and very few moths the most abundant being Silver Y 3, Diamond-back 3. On the 14th at 22.30 there were only 3 Diamond-back and I decided to switch off the two traps. There could still be one or two very warm nights between now and Spring worth trapping but I think it’s all over for this season, up here at least!

Suffolk Naturalists Society Members Evening – 23rd November

There’s not been much publicity for this so I thought it would be worth a mention. The SNS Autumn Members’ Evening is next Wednesday 23rd November at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Copdock, Ipswich. Doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. Members and non-members are encouraged to bring along some digital photos/presentations. 10-12 November

8 species trapped on the 10th. Now running just one trap in the best spot only. Highlights being; Silver Y 4, Diamond-back 1, Large Yellow Underwing 1 and Large Wainscot 1. I didn’t bother trapping on the 11th as very breezy here but at midnight it was very calm and warm so may have missed something.
12 Nov, another 8 Species including Silver Y 2, Diamond-back 4 and Dark Arches 2!

Quiet in Ipswich too.

Similar to Paul, I too had a quiet night, just 5sp, 7 moths in total, best moth being a single Silver Y.

Woolpit news..

Still very quiet here. Just three moths last night but at least one was a potential migrant – Silver Y, Yellow-line Quaker and a Blast’ lacticolella.
