SMG Moth Night at Oulton Marshes SWT Reserve – 6th July 2012

With a week of showers and breezes it was looking as though this meeting might go the way of others this year and get cancelled but after some showers during the day conditions looked fair for an evening’s mothing. Eight people turned up and we moved from the reserve car park in convoy to park up near the reserve and then use Keith’s truck to ferry the equipment across the railway crossing and into the reserve. Thirteen lights were run along the edge of the fen areas and out on the fen itself.

Rather surprisingly traps placed on the track at the edge of the fen and bordering some scrubby woodland fared pretty poorly in comparison to lights out in the middle of marshes. This was a long night of trapping with the last being trap closed down at dawn. Overall a very good night with nearly 160 species recorded in my book and some interesting species amongst them.

Some wine ropes were also put out along the track on the edge of the marshes but were pretty unsuccessful – no Double Darts on these. It felt a bit of cool night at times and not the sort of conditions for sugaring to be very productive so not too surprising.

Highlights were Double Dart, Shaded Fan-foot, Dotted Fan-foot, Plain Golden Y, Epinotia cruciana, Cream-bordered Green Pea, Nascia cilialis, Striped Wainscot, Brachmia inornatella, Argyresthia pygmaeella, Phlyctaenia perlucidalis, Valerian Pug, Pinion-streaked Snout, Coleophora taeniipennella and Donacaula mucronellus.

Woolpit 16th July

A reasonable night in the garden despite early reservations about the wind and rain. 37 sp accounted for, the highlight being an Orange Moth – a species I’ve so far only recorded in even years (starting in 2006) and only then in one’s and two’s. Other moths trapped included White Satin, Small Emerald, Early Thorn and Phoenix.

A blog about blogs …

On the way back from a not seeing any clearwings trip to Hampshire yesterday I made mention to my fellow travellers a few of the blogs I enjoy reading. As its raining (again) and I’m on the computer I thought I’d share some of these with you:

http://kentmicromoths.blogspot.co.uk/ – A blog dedicated to the micro lepidoptera of Kent (and beyond). Some useful search tips and lots of lovely leafmine pictures.

http://skevsblog.blogspot.co.uk/ – A bit of a miss-mash with a strong Leicestershire bias.

http://www.portlandbirdobs.org.uk/ – Check out the ‘Latest News’ section to see what’s (not) arriving at moth wise on the south coast, and so much more.

http://analternativenaturalhistoryofsussex.blogspot.co.uk/ – Graeme Lyons blog about bugs, beetles, spiders and plants – with a few moths here and there for good measure.

Good night for me on 13th at Hollesley

I retrieved the two traps in my garden as the thunder and lightening heralded the heavy rain. 148 species identified at present, just a handful more to go. Interesting macros new to my list were: Star-Wort, Shark, Buff Footman, Shoulder-striped Wainscot and Suspected. Common Footman took the number one position at around 70 specimens. Heart and Club seems to be nearly over now. Attractive and some interesting micros included Vitula biviella, Synaphe punctalis, Stenoptilia pterodactyla, Scythropia crataegella, Epagoge grotiana, Pammene aurita, Carcina quercana and Gypsonoma minutana.

Wet again but worth it.

Another wet morning (and night), another wet trap to look through. Story of the year really! Was worthwhile though, as recorded my highest total for the garden so far this season – 113sp, and quite a good number of moths trapped, especially footmen. Notables for the site included: Caloptilia elongella, Vitula biviella, Gypsonoma oppressana, Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana, Dichomeris marginella, Caloptilia syringella, Rosy footman (25), L-Album wainscot (another single), Suspected (3) and Privet hawk.

SMG Moth Night – Kings Forest – 13th July – CANCELLED

The meeting tonight has been cancelled, due to dodgy weather, illness, trips away, social lives, etc.

A few moths of note from this week at IGC

Nothing too spectacular seen in my traps this week and generally numbers have not been exceptional. Odd records of note include L-Album wainscot (11th), Acleris logiana, Suspected and Currant pug.

Also a small larva of Broad-bordered bee hawk is still munching away on the Honeysuckle in the garden.

Midweek Moth Night

Tuesday night, we ran a midweek moth night on private land at Aldeby with 3 members of SMG and 2 from Norfolk Moths who were able to come. Last of the daytime showers cleared by the time we switched the lights on at 10pm and as usual everything was dripping wet. We had a 2 hour window before light rain set in again which was turning very heavy by the time the traps were packed away at 2am. In spite of the conditions we had some very good moths from the 11 traps, including at least 25 new ones for the site. Macro moth highlights were Leopard Moth (NFS), 2nd generation Balsam Carpet, Phoenix (x 3), Spinach (x 5), Brown Scallop (NFS), V-moth (x 4), Garden Dart (NFS), Double Dart (x 15), Mullein larva (NFS), Suspected (NFS), Small Dotted Buff (NFS), Shaded Fan-foot (x 4), these were spread across the site which probably indicates that its expanded from its original patch of brambles. Micros included Eidophasia messingella, Aethes tesserana (NFS), Epinotia cruciana, and maybe some more when we collate our lists (it became too wet to do so on site), mine at the present stands at 136.

Good night for 9th July. A few nice moths around.

143 species on 9th July included the long awaited Small Elephant Hawk-moth for my site. It was accompanied by 9 of its related Elephant Hawk-moths. Common Footman was the third most abundant after C culmella and Uncertain. Also have Scarce and Dingy Footman. Nice moths for the 9th and recent days include Poplar Lutestring, Large Emerald, Bordered Sallow, Sciota adelphella, Acleris forsskaleana, Rhyacionia pinicolana and Ypsolopha sequella. Thunderstorms last night though.

Currant Clearwing is out …

Four Currant Clearwing seen this lunchtime at the Gallows Hill allotments in Hadleigh in what I would describe as warmish but dull conditions.
