1637 Oak Eggar, Lasiocampa quercus, (Linnaeus, 1758)

National Status : Common

Local Status : Resident (SMP Status 1)

Distribution and abundance : Widespread and common in the south-east of the county, becoming more irregular in the north-west

Habitats : Heathland, woodland, grassland, hedgerows, scrub and fen

Flight Period : Single-brooded, June to August

Larval foodplants : Heather, bramble, blackthorn, hawthorn, sallow and other deciduous shrubs.

Morley's Final Catalogue : Quite a common species everywhere, from Felixstow (Mly 1894) to Bradwell, Hopton and Gorleston (Mr, Doughty 1933). A great assembler; frequent in some years at light, especially so in 1925 at Monks Soham. The form callunae, which lies over the winter as pupa, has also occurred in the County.

Wingspan details : Forewing male 25-34mm, female 33-40mm, Wingspan 58-90mm
