I will need to retain the extra dark ones I think to give them a closer look.

You only have a limited number of characters to use in the message which suits me better as I have limited time. Am on Facebook but don’t really do much on there and don’t check it regularly.

Raymond – I think that Tawny pinion looks a much slimmer moth on first impression. It is overall darker too, i.e the pale areas are a darker shade too unlike Pale pinion which also looks a more robust moth to me (broader wings). There are darker marks on the ‘crests’ on the thorax on Tawny too. Tawny certainly in my experience is the scarcer species, only ever had it once at IGC and only seen it a small number of other times whereas Pale is regular now after colonizing Suffolk in the mid 2000′s.

When I get a dark one I often wonder ‘is it a Tawny Pinion?’. I look at the picture in Skinner (RIP) and still wonder. Supposedly about just how dark. Is that the only dividing line. Any guidance Neil?
